Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Ask the students: are there animals that live near your home or work? What are they? Are they harmful or beneficial?
We will be going over these words: Swoop, Prey, Flourish, Unsightly (using Google Docs)
The students will read the text quickly to get a general idea of the story. They will then be presented with these questions: What do you know about the birds mentioned in the story? What city are they in? What do you know about this city? What happens to the pigeons in this story? How does David locate or find the falcons?
Students will read the text again, this time slower, to get more detailed information. They will be asked to answer fill-in-the-blank questions. The questions are: Falcons are bird hunters and can reach amazing speeds of ___(280 kph). Falcons don't actually ___(harm) the birds they chase. Dubai, a city which has___ out of the desert (risen). He's using the ancient Arab sport of ___(falconry).
Ask the students to discuss the text further. Discuss: Should humans help wildlife/animals living in the city? How could we help? Review errors, answer students' questions.
