Pronunciation /ɜː/ and /ə/
Elementary A1-A2 level

Description

This lesson focuses on helping students recognize and pronounce the vowel sounds /ɜː/ and /ə/ in common words related to jobs and work. Students first identify the sounds through listening, then practise producing them accurately through controlled and guided activities before using the words in short conversations.

Materials

Abc An audio
Abc Pictures of different jobs
Abc word cards

Main Aims

  • Recognize the vowel sounds /ɜː/ and /ə/ in familiar words.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Accurately pronounce target words while asking and answering simple questions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher Says It Wrong! -Show pictures of jobs: •nurse •teacher •doctor •worker •police officer -Tell students: “I’m going to say the words. Listen carefully. Some are correct, and some are wrong.” -Intentionally mispronounce a few words. •narse ✘ •nurse ✓ •teasher ✘ •teacher ✓ •warker ✘ •worker ✓ -Then ask: “Why was it wrong?” -Elicit “The pronunciation.”

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Exercise 3a -Tell students: “You’re going to hear some words. Just listen carefully. Don’t repeat yet.” -Ask ICQs -Play Audio 3a once. -Ask general questions: •How many words did you hear? •Were all the words pronouncing the same way? •Did you notice any words that sounded similar?

Clarification (Presentation) (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Write the two target sounds /ɜː/ and /ə/ on the board. -Write examples from Activity 3a. -Ask a few CCQs (e.g., Which sound is longer? Do these words have the same vowel sound?) -Briefly explain that /ɜː/ is a long vowel sound, while /ə/ is a short, weak vowel sound. -Model the pronunciation of the words from Activity 3a, focusing on each sound. -Students repeat through choral, group, and individual drilling.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Exercise 3b -Tell students: “Listen and repeat the words. Pay attention to the pronunciation of the two target sounds, /ɜː/ and /ə/. Then, practise saying the words with your partner.” (First time listening only. Second time listen and repeat) -Ask ICQs. -Play the audio. -Play the audio again, pausing after each word for students to repeat chorally. -Conduct group and individual drilling, providing immediate correction when needed. -Write the target words randomly on the board and ask individual students to read them aloud. -Give quick feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Find Your Tongue-Twister partner -Prepare word cards. Each pair of cards forms a short two-word tongue twister with the same target sound. -Example Cards /ɜː/ •nurse – work •worker – world •Thursday – worker /ə/ •doctor – teacher •police – about •banana – teacher •today – police -Give each student one word card. -Students walk around the classroom saying only their word aloud. -They listen carefully to classmates’ pronunciation to find the person whose word has the same target vowel sound. -Once they find their partner, they stand together and practise saying the two words together three times like a mini tongue twister. •“Nurse, work! Nurse, work! Nurse, work!” •“Doctor, teacher! Doctor, teacher! Doctor, teacher!” -Each pair then says their two-word tongue twister aloud to the class. -Ask ICQs. -Monitor then provide quick pronunciation feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Create a TV Job Advertisement -Divide students into pairs. -Each pair chooses one job (teacher, nurse, doctor, police officer, worker, etc.). -They create a 30-second job advertisement to encourage people to apply. -Give students 4–5 minutes to prepare and practise their pronunciation. Example: “Are you a nurse? Come and work at our hospital! We offer flexible hours and a friendly work environment.” -Ask ICQS. -Monitor and provide help if needed. -Each pair presents their advertisement orally to the class. -After each presentation, classmates identify the target words they heard. -Then the class votes for: •The clearest pronunciation. •The most creative advertisement. -Provide brief whole class feedback on pronunciation, highlighting accurate production and correcting common errors if necessary.
