Past Simple

Description

This lesson introduces students to the English Immersion Program and helps them build confidence using key vocabulary related to learning, professional growth, and veterinary careers. Through interactive speaking activities, students get to know one another, establish course expectations, and begin communicating in English from day one.

Main Aims

  • Students will understand and use essential vocabulary related to professional development, learning, and veterinary practice while building confidence to communicate in English during the course.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Recognize and use key vocabulary related to professional growth, teamwork, and veterinary careers.
  • Introduce themselves and talk about their experience, goals, and responsibilities using simple English.
  • Build confidence communicating with classmates through guided speaking activities.

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • Let the students wake up and start the day with more energy and enthusiasm.

Start the day with a quick dynamic, relax and have fun. "Basta" game.

Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • Gain more vocabulary.

Ask students to give you the vocabulary cards of the day. Teacher checks them in case of spelling mistakes or wring definition. Put participation on the Excel.

Vocabulary (13-15 minutes) • Understand and use target vocabulary related to professional growth, responsibilities, and veterinary practice in meaningful communication.

The teacher presents each word with: A clear definition One contextualized example sentence After each word, one student produces a sentence orally. The teacher reformulates gently if needed. Students write the vocabulary and one example sentence in their notebooks.

Presentation (30-32 minutes) • Help students understand when Past Simple is used before focusing on form.

Teacher draws a simple timeline. Teacher writes examples: I worked yesterday. We cleaned the exam room last week. The dog vomited last night. Teacher elicits: Past Simple = finished action in the past. Usually linked to a past time expression. Check the structure of affirmative, negative and questions. Ask for examples.

Pronunciation practice (18-20 minutes) • Introduce affirmative Past Simple forms and basic -ed pronunciation patterns.

Teach the different pronunciations of -ed endings of regular verbs in past. Teacher models three examples on the board: /t/ - worked, cleaned /d/ - played, opened /ld/ - visited, needed Students repeat naturally.

Controlled Practice (16-18 minutes) • Practice forming accurate affirmative Past Simple sentences.

Students complete the sentences with the correct Past Simple form. Give them 15 sentences in total and 10 minutes to answer. Check the answers together.
