Identify and produce the correct word stress in familiar multisyllabic words with reasonable accuracy.

Use familiar words with appropriate word stress in short spoken interactions
Procedure (36-45 minutes)
Greet the class naturally. Ask students: What do you usually say when you meet someone for the first time? How do you greet your teacher? How do you greet your best friend? Is it the same greeting or different?
Tell students ‘I’m going to say some words twice, listen carefully. One pronunciation sounds natural and one doesn’t. Don’t repeat-just listen and decide which one sounds better. Ask ICQs HELlo, goodBYE, TEAcher, EVerybody Then say the same words incorrectly helLO, GOODbye, etc Ask students Do they sound the same? Elicit (No) Which sounds more natural? Which part is stronger?
Write hello and goodbye on the board. Model HEL-lo / good-BYE Ask students: Which part sounds stronger on hello? (Hel) Is the stress on the first or second syllable? (First) Do the same with good-BYE Ask CCQs: Do we stress every syllable? How many stressed syllable does a word usually have? ETC Drill HELlo, Sorry, WELcome, goodBYE chorally, groups, then individually.
(Controlled practice): Exercise 3c Ask students to listen carefully and underline the stressed syllable in these words. Ask ICQs. Do the activity individually, pair check, then whole class feedback. Exercise 3d (optional)
Exercise 3c Ask students to practice saying the words from exercise 3c in pairs. Ask ICQs Monitor and provide help if needed. Or 3e (Optional)
Divide the class into 2 groups. Give students cards faced down on a desk. Student picks one card, read the word with the correct word stress, then use it in a short greeting or sentence (Cards: Hello, goodbye, teacher, morning, everybody, etc) Ask ICQs
