GOING GREEN
B1 level

Description

This is a 45-minute vocabulary and speaking lesson designed for a B1+ / B2 (Upper-Intermediate) class consisting of young adult learners. The students are generally motivated and communicative, but they occasionally struggle with retaining abstract and academic vocabulary. Therefore, this lesson deliberately moves away from traditional, dictionary-based vocabulary teaching. Instead, it adopts a multi-sensory and learner-centered approach. The lesson utilizes a "Gallery Walk" format to cater to kinesthetic learners, allowing them to physically move around the classroom while creating cognitive links between 9 target academic words (e.g., sustainability, infrastructure, emissions) and concrete visual stimuli. Following the vocabulary acquisition stage, the lesson transitions into a personalized speaking practice. By analyzing real-world examples (Denmark's green initiatives) and applying these concepts to their own local environment, students are encouraged to practice fluency, express opinions, and use the target vocabulary in a highly authentic and meaningful context.

Materials

Abc Board
Abc Coursebook
Abc Smartboard

Main Aims

  • To present and practice 9 target academic vocabulary items related to the environment (emission, drought, sustainability, initiatives, awareness campaign, innovation, infrastructure, pioneers, greenhouse gases). To develop students' speaking fluency and communicative competence through personalized, free-production discussions on local and global green solutions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice activating prior knowledge (schema) and predicting content using visual cues. To develop students' ability to infer meaning from visual context rather than relying on direct L1 (first language) translation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

"Earth in 2050" & "Mystery Numbers" • Draw a mind map on the board asking for predictions about the Earth in 2050. Ask "Why?" to elicit human impact. • Display Slide 3 (5 vs. 1). Ask Ss to guess the ratio (5 bicycles for every 1 car in Copenhagen). • Transition: Tell Ss they will learn 9 target words to discuss how Denmark built this system.

PRESENTATION (10-13 minutes) • Presents the target language using both textual definitions and concrete visual stimuli, catering to different learning styles (kinesthetic/visual).

Worksheet & Gallery Walk • Matching: Distribute worksheets. Ss match the 9 target words with definitions. (CCQ: Are we writing sentences? / Ss: No, matching.) • Visual Linking: Direct Ss to the 9 numbered images on the walls. Ss stand up, walk around, and write the correct target word under each picture number on the back of their paper.

PRACTICE (6-8 minutes) • Provides controlled practice to ensure Ss understand the form and precise meaning of the vocabulary before they attempt to use it freely.

Controlled & Semi-Controlled Tasks • Gap-fill: Instruct Ss to complete the 9 questions in the coursebook using the target words to check accuracy. • Visual Analysis (Denmark Map): Display Slide 14. Pair Ss up to answer specific, structured questions about Denmark's energy and transport (e.g., wind energy due to the sea).

PRODUCTION (7-9 minutes) • The core of the PPP model: Ss use the newly acquired vocabulary freely and authentically to discuss their own lives and local environment, building fluency

Personalization & Free Speaking • "What About You?" Display Slides 15 & 16. Shift the focus from Denmark to the students' immediate reality. • Instruct pairs to discuss what "Going Green" means in their daily lives.

WRAP-UP (3-5 minutes) • Provides a low-stress formative assessment to evaluate the success of the Presentation and Production stages.

Ask Ss to grab a small piece of paper. They must write ONE new vocabulary word they learned and ONE green idea they liked from their partner.
