Sing it!

Description

This celebratory final session is designed for a group of 10-12 adult students (aged 26-36) as a high-energy "graduation" event. Structured as a three-round musical game show, the session blends listening comprehension, quick vocabulary recall, and collaborative teamwork. It introduces a nostalgic twist by incorporating literal English translations of iconic Spanish songs. The primary focus is on spontaneous production, building group rapport, lowering affective filters, and celebrating the successful completion of the course in a relaxed, humorous environment.

Main Aims

  • To foster spontaneous spoken interaction, auditory decoding, and collaborative problem-solving through a multi-round musical trivia and performance competition.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice fast-paced listening comprehension by identifying auditory "hooks" within a 5-second window.
  • To reinforce vocabulary related to pop culture, films, and media in a contextualized manner.
  • To celebrate course completion and solidify a positive, confident attitude toward English communication.
  • To promote low-anxiety speaking and group negotiation through a rotating spokesperson (Vocero) mechanic.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set a celebratory, nostalgic tone and establish the team structure.

The teacher welcomes the class to their "Graduation Game Show." Divide the 10-12 students into 3 balanced teams. Briefly explain that tonight is about fluency, laughter, and zero grammar stress.

Round 1: Run to the mic (23-25 minutes) • To stimulate rapid auditory recognition and lower speaking inhibitions.

Place a microphone on a table in the center of the room. Play the first 5 seconds of an iconic English track. The first student to run and grab the mic wins the floor. Scoring: 1 pt for Title, 2 pts for Artist, 3 pts if they confidently sing the next lines. Apply the "Stealing" rule if they fail.

Round 2: The Bored Executive (18-20 minutes) • To practice listening for meaning and foster collaborative negotiation.

The teacher approaches each team's station one by one. The teacher reads a famous song lyric completely flat and neutral (no melody). Graduation Twist: Include literal English translations of famous Spanish songs. Teams get 15 seconds to huddle and whisper. A Rotating Spokesperson (Vocero) must deliver or sing the continuation.

Round 3: Trivia (18-20 minutes) • To practice quick-fire recall and strategic risk-taking under time pressure.

Reveal the Trivia Board with 4 categories (Disney, Soundtracks, Pop Culture, Spanglish) divided into 100, 200, and 300 points. Teams take turns choosing a square. The teacher reads the question in English. The team has 5 seconds (tracked by the 5-Second Torch) to answer. Open the floor for points-stealing if they miss.
