Description

In this lesson, students develop their listening skills through a conversation about a one-day visit to Tokyo. The lesson starts with a speaking warm-up (Fast Pics, Fast Opinions), where students look at pictures of different countries and cities and express whether they would like to visit or live there, giving reasons for their opinions. This is followed by a pair-work decision-making activity (The Perfect 24 Hours Challenge), in which students imagine that a friend is visiting their city for only one day and agree on three activities to include in the itinerary. Students then complete a vocabulary pre-teaching task to infer the meanings of key words from context. Next, students listen to a conversation between two friends planning a day in Tokyo and complete gist and detailed listening tasks focusing on places, activities, and travel plans. To consolidate learning, students work in pairs and discuss which places from the listening they would prefer or not prefer to visit if they were flying to Tokyo the next morning, providing reasons for their choices and comparing their opinions with their partners.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify both gist and specific information in a conversation about a one-day trip and discuss their own travel preferences using relevant vocabulary.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To activate and extend travel- and city-related vocabulary. To express and justify preferences about places to visit. To negotiate and make decisions with a partner. To infer the meaning of key vocabulary from context.

Procedure

Warm-up: Fast Pictures, Fast Opinion (5 minutes) • To activate background knowledge about travel and cities. To encourage students to express and justify personal opinions.

Students look at pictures of different cities/countries and discuss whether they would like to visit or live there.

Lead in: The Perfect 24 Hours Challenge (5 minutes) • To introduce the topic of planning a city visit. To prepare students for the listening text through key vocabulary and prediction.

Students work in pairs to choose three activities for a one-day city visit and then complete a vocabulary task on key listening words.

Pre-teaching Vocabulary: Choose the Correct Definition Worksheet (5 minutes) • To clarify key vocabulary needed for understanding the listening text. To increase students' confidence before the listening stage.

Students complete the Choose the Correct Definition worksheet and match key vocabulary (crowded, stopover, cherry blossom, locals, special offer) with their meanings using contextualized example sentences. Answers are checked together.

While-Listening 1 (4-6 minutes) • To develop listening for general understanding. To help students identify the main ideas and key locations in the conversation.

Students listen for gist and identify the places Harry and Mike decide to visit.

While-Listening 2 (4-6 minutes) • To develop listening for specific information and detail. To help students understand reasons, preferences, and planned activities.

Students listen again and answer detailed comprehension questions about the speakers' plans and reasons.

Post-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To personalize the topic and respond to the listening text. To provide meaningful speaking practice using ideas from the audio.
