Main Aims

  • To develop students' reading skills by reading for gist and specific information using a text about birthday celebrations around the world.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students' understanding of key vocabulary related to celebrations and birthdays through context.
  • To raise students' awareness of birthday traditions in different cultures.
  • To engage students and activate their speaking skills.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students. To activate schema. To engage students and activate their speaking skills.

Teacher (T) greets the students, writes "Birthday" on the board, and announces it as the lesson topic. T models the activity by asking one student, "When is your birthday?" and "What do you do on your birthday?" Then, T instructs the students to turn to the classmate sitting next to them and ask the same questions. T restricts this peer exchange to a two-minute time limit, then elicits answers from two or three students to formally conclude the warm-up before initiating the pre-reading stage.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text. To teach key vocabulary

T provides a QR code for students to access a Quizlet activity where they try to match the target vocabulary with its definition. T instructs Ss to make pairs and match the words to the correct definitions. During the verification stage, T elicits proposed answers from individual Ss and requires verification from the class to confirm agreement. T deploys Concept Checking Questions (CCQs) for each item to prove comprehension before confirming the answer. T models the correct pronunciation, and commands choral repetition from Ss.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To encourage Ss to read for gist/general understanding. For learners to get an overview of the text.

T instructs Ss to take out their books then says: "Read the text quickly. Match the situations to the correct country. Do not read every word. You have two minutes." At two minutes, T stops the activity and elicits the answers from Ss. T confirms the correct answers on the board and terminates the skimming phase.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-11 minutes) • To practice reading for specific information (scanning). To further familiarise with the text.

T directs Ss to the True/False section of the handout and issues the instruction: "Read the text again, decide if the statements are True (T) or False (F), and correct the false statements." T sets a strict timer for 7 minutes to prevent over-reading. Ss execute the task individually while T monitors the room. Upon timer expiration, T stops the activity and elicits the answers, requiring Ss to justify their T/F decisions using evidence from the text and to provide corrections for false statements.

Post-Reading/Listening (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

T divides Ss into groups of three and instructs each group to design a birthday celebration. T displays the following questions on the board for Ss to answer when designing. After Ss are finished, T asks one spokesperson from each group to present their finalized celebration plan to the class.
