Journey to Sydney
B1 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To develop Ss' skills of reading for gist, detail, and critical reading (differentiating fact vs. opinion) in the context of a travel blog.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To practice reading strategies such as predicting content from visuals and schema activation.
Procedure (24-32 minutes)
Put Ss into pairs. Ask them: "What is your dream travel destination? If you could study abroad anywhere, where would you go and why?
Project the pictures of Sydney. Ask: "Look at these pictures. Where do you think this is?"
Use "The Secret Word" game. Give simple English definitions and the first letter for the target words (spectacular, efficient, harbour,). Ss guess the words before seeing them in the text.
Instruct Ss to read the text very quickly to tick the topics in Exercise 2a. Emphasize that they must NOT read every word. Check answers with choral responses from the class.
Instruct Ss to read carefully to find exactly what Lucila says about the ticked topics for Ex 2b. Ask them to underline the evidence. Compare answers with a partner.
Write FACT and OPINION on the board. Explain the difference. Have Ss analyze 3 specific sentences (e.g., "Katie lives in a lovely old-style house...") to decide if they are facts or opinions based on word clues like "lovely" or "seems".
Project Mentimeter QR code. Have Ss use their phones to answer: "What was the most interesting fact you read about Sydney in the text?" Review anonymous answers on the board.
