pre-intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
• To provide scan, detailed and gist reading practice using a text about great weekend in the context of Fake stories about weekends on social media
Subsidiary Aims
-
To clarify and practise the meaning , the form, and the part of speech of certain words
Procedure (42-52 minutes)
I will show students four social media posts about the activities I usually do on weekends, two of them are true, and two are fake. They have to guess which ones are real and justify their answers. Next, I will ask the students to read the four tweets on page 34 individually for one minute. They will then discuss their ideas with a partner before sharing them with the whole class. I will monitor the discussions and provide feedback where necessary.
I will show pictures related to the target vocabulary (invent, getaway, respondent, and survey) to help students understand the meaning without translating. I will encourage students to guess the words by asking guided questions and eliciting answers. After eliciting or presenting each word, I will check students' understanding by asking CCQs. Then, I will write the word on the board, highlight its part of speech and form, and model the pronunciation. I will ask students to repeat the word chorally and then individually, paying attention to stress and pronunciation. Finally, I will give students a short controlled practice activity (gap-fill sentences) to check their understanding and provide feedback where necessary.
I will ask the students to read the article "A Boring Weekend?" individually to check their predictions. Then, they will read the four tweets again and decide which ones are probably not true, giving reasons based on the information in the article. After that, they will compare their answers with a partner before sharing them with the whole class. I will monitor the students throughout the activity and provide feedback where necessary.
I will ask the students to read the questions of part C for one minute and then read the article again and complete Exercise 1c by identifying the incorrect information in each sentence and correcting it using information from the text. After completing the task individually, they will compare their answers with a partner. Finally, I will conduct whole-class feedback, elicit the correct answers, and clarify any misunderstandings if necessary.
I will ask the students to work in pairs and discuss the questions in Exercise 1d. They will talk about how they usually answer when people ask them, "Did you have a good weekend?" and describe the last time they had a really exciting weekend. I will encourage them to give reasons and add details to their answers. While they are speaking, I will monitor their discussions, noting down any common language errors without interrupting their fluency. Finally, I will conduct whole-class feedback by asking a few students to share their ideas and I will provide delayed error correction if necessary.
