Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text (Fake stories about weekends on social media)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Fake stories about weekends on social media

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show students four social media posts about the activities I usually do on weekends , two of them are true and two are fake. They have to guess the real one. Then I will show them some pictures about common weekend activities and ask them what they usually do on weekends and have they ever exaggerated their weekend experiences.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will write 4 sentences on the board(1. The game was tiring. 2.The players were tired. 3. The news was surprising. 4.we were surprised. ) . Then I will ask CCQs: Who feels tired or surprised?(the player, we) what caused feeling?(the game, the news). I will write on the board(-ing describes a thing or situation/ -ed describes a person`s feelings)/for explaining the form I will write (verb+ ing= adjectives/ verb+ed= adjectives) Then I will give the students to do the controlled-practice in 3 minutes individually and compare their answers with a partner and finally check the answers as a whole class.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will ask the students to read the tweets individually (1 minute). Students complete the gist task by deciding which tweets they think are true and which are probably fake. They compare their answers in pairs and explain their reasons. I will conducts whole-class feedback and briefly confirms the answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will ask students to read the article carefully. Students complete the scanning task by answering the six comprehension questions and correcting the false information using evidence from the text. After finishing, students compare their answers with a partner. Then we will check the answers with whole class and I will ask them to refer to the text to justify their responses.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students are going to answer these questions: 1. Which is more important to you? having a good weekend or posting about it? Why? 2. Do you think people post their real lives on social media? Why? 3. If you wanted to lie about your weekend, how would you make it sound more exciting?
