Reported Speech

Description

Students will be introduced to reported speech through affirmative and negative statements. They will learn the differences between direct and reported speech, practice pronoun and time expression changes, and apply basic tense backshifting. Through guided and communicative activities, students will begin transforming spoken information into reported statements.

Main Aims

Procedure

Activation (25-30 minutes) • Let the students wake up and start the day with more energy and enthusiasm.

Label four corners: Strongly Agree Agree Disagree Strongly Disagree Read statements like: -Online classes are better than in-person classes. -Coffee is essential in the morning. -Working alone is better than teamwork. -Deadlines are motivating. -Technology makes life easier.

Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • Gain more vocabulary.

Ask students to give you the vocabulary cards of the day. Teacher checks them in case of spelling mistakes or wring definition. Put participation on the Excel.

Presentation (38-40 minutes) • To introduce the structure and rules of reported statements.

Present examples of direct speech. Convert examples into reported speech. Highlight reporting verbs. Explain pronoun changes. Introduce basic time expression changes. Present tense backshifting rules. Complete several examples together.

Controlled Practice (17-20 minutes) • To practice accurate transformation of statements into reported speech.

Distribute a worksheet containing direct statements. Students rewrite each sentence in reported speech. Check answers together. Clarify common mistakes.

Pair Practice (18-20 minutes) • To reinforce reporting structures through peer interaction.

Students work in pairs. Student A reads a statement card. Student B reports the statement. Students switch roles. Teacher monitors and corrects errors.
