Never too late
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification, practice and review of Past simple
-
By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to form and use Past Simple negatives and questions using "did/didn't" + the base form to talk about past events.
Subsidiary Aims
-
Students will practice reading short stories to match amazing achievements to the right people, while looking at simple grammar rules to see how "did" and "didn't" work with regular verbs. They will also practice speaking with a partner to share their own past stories and find things they both did not do.
Procedure (20 minutes)
Start the lesson by telling your students a short, engaging story about an old person who achieved something incredible. After finishing your story, turn to the class and ask them: "Do you personally know an older person who did something amazing like this?"
Show Slide 2 to introduce the three characters and ask the class what amazing things they think these people did. Then, have students read the short profile stories for Kimani Maruge, Harriette Thompson, and Dr. Laila Denmark on Slides 3-5. Point out the highlighted words like "didn't learn", "didn't walk", and "didn't retire" as they read. Finally, show Slide 6 so they can match each person to their specific age and achievement.
Show Slide 7 to explain how questions are built: [Did] + [Subject] + [Base form of verb]. Show Slide 8 to explain negatives: [Subject] + [didn't] + [Base form of verb]. Remind them that the main verb changes back to its base form (e.g., didn't go). Use Slide 9 to ask the Concept Checking Questions out loud to make sure they understand how to use "did/didn't" in the sentence
Show Slide 10 and give students one minute to quickly choose the correct options for the sentences. This tests if they can spot the difference between an action using "did/didn't" and a past state using "wasn't/weren't". Show Slide 11 right after so they can check their answers.
Give students one minute with Slide 12 to finish the sentence frames about their own lives (e.g., "When I was 15, I..."). Then, move to Slide 13, put students in pairs, and challenge them to talk to each other to find at least one past activity that neither of them did not do last week (e.g., Student A: "I didn't go to the gym." Student B: "Me neither!").
