Description

Students have already met want + noun and want + to + infinitive. In this unit would like + noun and would like + to + infinitive are presented as polite ways of asking for things, or saying that you want to do something. The question form Would you like … ? is also introduced for offering things. Would like is also contrasted with like (for expressing likes/dislikes in general)

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of the phrases with "Any & Some" in the context of food and restaurant organization

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of the "would like" phrase in the context of food

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students about what they'd like as gift for their birthday work in pairs and divide them in to 2 groups Then ask them to talk about their partner's idea

Test #1 (1-20 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Practice 2: Let them guess the word by themselves. Then play the audio then stop after 3 blanks. Then CCQs. First ICQs: 1: How many boxes do we have? 2: How many words do you have in the box? 3: Are you going to listen to it now? CCQs: 1: When really is his birthday? 2: What does he want as a present? 3: Is he happy about his birthday? So let's continue Practice 3 : ICQs: 1: How many people are you going to listen? 2: How many columns do we have? 3: What is the first person's name? 4: The second one? 5: The third one? 6: Do they want to do activities in the morning? OK, listen and complete the chart.

Teach (1-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

pre-teach : Practice 1 ICQs: 1: How many boxes do you have? 2: How many sentence do we have in box 1? 3: How many sentence do we have in box 2? 4: What times should we think about? while-teach : write 2 sentences in blue box on the board Then CCQs (I like Coke) : 1: Am I talking about my general preference or this moment? 2: Do I like Coke only today? 3: Is Coke something I usually enjoy? 4: Am I asking for a Coke now? 5: Does this sentence talk about what I like in general? CCQs (I'd like a Coke) 1: Am I talking about present? 2: Do I want a Coke now or soon? 3: Am I ordering a Coke? 4: Does this mean I always like Coke? 5: Is that more polite than "I want a Coke" General : 1: Which sentence talks about a general liking? 2: Which sentence talks about a request at the moment? 3: Which sentence can you use for ordering? 4: Which sentence describes your taste or preference?

Test #2 (1-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Practice 3 can be a good exercise for the controlled one. ICQs: 1: How many sentences do you see? 2: Are they both correct? 3: How should you understand the true sentence? 4: Are you going to just listen?

Free practice (1-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Practice 2 : Ask students to work in-pairs, ask and answer these 2 questions and look at the answers below. Then ask them 1 by 1 by yourself and let them make sentences. Do practice 4 as a quiz and individually, let them finish and correct their errors on the spot
