Description

In this lesson, Sts will learn how to use functional language in the context of ''Let's meet'' and ''How about'', the meaning, pronunciation and forms and how to implement it in real life situations. T will provide the necessary materials to improve Sts speaking and listening skills, this will further help sts in arranging to meet various people such as friends and family.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows sts a picture about two people having a converstaion on the phone. T instructs Sts to discuss in pairs about what they see in the picture. The main aim is for Sts to activate their contextual guessing skills and predict the TL of the lesson. T instructs Sts to write on a simple paper and place it on the WB. A quick discussion will be held about their answers. T at random picks a St and practice the TL. At this stage, Sts still have no idea about the main topic of the day. T demostrates with a strong learner about how to meet. such questions are; - Hello, Are you free tomorrow?/ When are you free? - Let's meet for coffee...

Exposure (2-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T plays an audio file from the workbook and presents three scenarios A,B and C form English Unlimited (appendix 1). Sts will listen to the audio and point out the correct sentece. At this stage, Sts will be in a group of three and discuss and clarify the correct answer. T will pay attention to some difficulties in lexis and meaning. Such as; tomorrow, cafe, station, meet.

Highlighting (14-20 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T gets the attention of Sts and plays the audio file again. At this stage, T intends to clarify the TL and makes it meaningful to Sts. T divides class into group of four and instructs them to answer the questions on (appendix 2). Some quick ICQ's will be asked, such as; -are we going to write or listen? Ans: Both -are you going to work individually or as a team? T replays the audio file two or more times, just for Sts to understand the sentences clearly. Answer key will be provided.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T clarifies some important lexis and explains some sentences clearly such as; Let's meet...., How about...., Its near..... T drills Sts to pronounce the whole sentences accurately. Furthermore, T clarifies the differences between; - Let's meet for (activity) -Let's meet at (time/place) -Let's meet on (date) -How about (place/time/activity/date). T further drills Sts and makes sure they pronounce every sentences accurately and focuses on stress patterns. T provides further examples to back up the above explanation such as; - Let's meet for dinner - Let's meet for a tennis match - Let's meet at the cinema - Let's meet on Wednesday Sts will still be in the same group of four. T hands another task (appendix 4) This activity is called ''ORDER OF THE KING''. T starts with instruction: Tells sts to pay attention and they have less than a minute for this. In this game, we have three Personas (1.Michael/Laurence 2.Grant/Remziye 3.Illke/Deniz) that engaged in conversation via the phone. Sentences are given to each group and the task is to put it in order. Answers willl be discussed in the class.

Controlled Practice (3-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T presents an HO to Sts. This task purely a speaking task where Sts practice expressions and engage in short converstaions. (appendix 5) such as when?/ where? T focuses on stress patterns and sounds of some words. T prepares the next exercise. Same groups(appendix 6). T reuires sts to work in the same group to figure of the answers to the question. Answer keys are provided and will be discussed briefly.

Free Practice (4-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

To demonstrate the effectiveness of the pair work, choose one learner form each group and have a conversation. -find out if he's/she's free -suggest a place and say where it is -arrange a different day or time if necessary Then Sts will practice together in their groups.
