-ed and -ing adjectives

Description

In this lesson, students will focus on adjectives ending in -ed and -ing. Also, they will have some control practice and work on their speaking.

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of TV and entertainment

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher is going to ask the students if they remember the reading or not. - The teacher will give students a minute to brainstorm anything they can remember from the previous lesson - The teacher will ask some random students to share their ideas.

Highlighting (5-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-The Teacher will ask students to underline all the -ed and -ing adjectives in the reading that they have already read. -While the students are trying to underline the adjectives, the teacher will write some examples on the board. -"TV can sometimes be fun and exciting" - "It's just boring" - " You may be surprised ho much television we watch" - "Many people are worried about how much TV the children watch" - The teacher will ask students to check their answers in pairs. - The teacher will draw the students' attention on the adjectives which are written on the board. - At the end , the teacher will get some feedback of what adjectives student found in the reading. By asking some random students as a whole class activity.

Clarification (20-25 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- The teacher will give the students a handout which contains 5 T/F sentences related to -ed or -ing adjectives. - the teacher will ask some ICQ's to make sure students understand the instructions. -"are we going to work alone or in pairs" -"will you just answer the question, or write the reason for the false statements?" - The teacher will ask the students to check the sentences individually. -The teacher will ask the students to check their answers in pairs. -The teacher will provide the students with the answer key and check as a whole class. -The teacher will clarify to the students that -ed adjectives are about feelings and -ing adjectives are about doing something. - The teacher will work on the pronunciation of the adjectives. He will clarify "ED" sounds at the end of different adjectives by giving them some drilling activities. -for example, the teacher will pronounce "excited", "interested" and "worried" and ask the students to tell him the difference. - then the teacher will provide them with a few more examples; "surprised", "tired", "frightened", "bored" - Make the students repeat each word with the correct pronunciation. -The teacher will focus the stress of each adjectives provided in the above text. -for example, “ interested”, “ worried” “ excited” “frightened” -The teacher will give the students a handout which contains two sentences and two questions. -The students are going to answer the questions according to the sentences which are given. (first they will work individually) -The teacher will ask the students to check there answers in pairs. The teacher will then go over the answer as a whole class activity.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-The teacher will hand the students a handout which contains six questions. -The teacher will first ask them individually to choose the correct adjectives. -The teacher will ask the students to check their answers in pairs. -The teacher will provide the students with the answer key.(on the WB) -The teacher will ask students to work in pairs, take turns to ask and answer the questions. Also, the teacher ask the students to ask follow up questions if possible. -At the end, the teacher will ask some random student to tell the class two things which they found out about their partner.
