Description

In this lesson, students will be a reading a text about 'Across Culture Shops' and will be learning lexis throughout the story.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about days of the week, hours, towns and cities in the context of travel, shops, hours, comparisons

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of shops in cities, when they close and open in different cities in the context of travel, shops, clock, oenining and closing hours, comparisons

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will tell students about a city I love and why I love it. Go to specifics (such as a street where they have shops, coffee shops, and how they are open until 2 or 3 in the morning..etc)

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-20 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will then ask a few students about their favorite city/area in the city and why. I will call students up and ask them to stand in a circle. I will ask them to give me specific vocabulary of places on a street. I will write down every single word they know and numbers from 1 to 12. by that time we will have words such as ; city, town,shop, big shop, small shop, church, mosque,station morning, midday, afternoon, evening, night holiday, monday, tuesday,wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 closed ,open, many, people, sleep,until

While-Reading/Listening #1 (20-25 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will divide the students into pairs of two and give them reading material. I will ask them to read it on their own for a few minutes then I will read out loud, breaking the sentences into a few parts, they will repeat after me. this will also give me a chance to correct their pronunciation. I will write on the board for stressing points. once we are done with the reading. I will ask students to underline the words they don't know.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (25-35 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will ask each group to tell me the words they don't know. I will write them on the board and ask the rest of the class what they might be. I will help with the guessing process until it is correct.

Post-Reading/Listening (35-45 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will give students 5 mins to read exercise B and 5 more to do it all together as a class to correct any mistakes
