Description

In this lesson students learn and practice the forms 'used to' and 'would' in context of Legends.They also practice the meaning of understanding the similarity and the differences between the two words.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of “would” for past habits, and to contrast it with “used to” in the context of King Arthur, The Legend of Camelot.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in Freer speaking.

Procedure

Focus on Grammar (8-10 minutes) • To focus Ss on the meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL”

Look at the 3 sentences from the previous lesson on WB. Ask if the sentences are in the past, present or future? Which of the verbs 'used to' and 'would' refer to habitual actions and which to states. 1.2.3 Shown on WB. Discuss in pairs- Ss finish early to write answers. 1. Did it happen in the past.Y, 2. Will it happen in the future? N 3. Do we say 'used to' to talk about habitual actions?Y 4. Do we say 'would' to talk about states? N Form; used to + bare infinitve, would + bare infinitive Pronunciation /wud/ /juːzd/ no stress on both Negative Form; didn't / did not + base form verb Example from Ss to check understanding Drilling Negative Form; wouldn't / would + base form verb Example from Ss to check undertsanding. Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To practice and complete the sentences with 'used to' or 'would' in the text

Ex1- 'Used to' and 'would'. HO1-Cross out the forms that are not possible. Sometimes both forms are possible. Circulate and Monitor. Swap papers. Check on Wall for answers. Drill each sentence and ask if both forms are possible?

Controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice.

Task 1. Complete the sentences with 'used to' or 'would'. HO1 P/W the Ss to read and fill in gaps. Circulate and Monitor. Ss read each sentence from the paper. Discuss whether both can be used? Ask students why would isn't possible in sentences 1 and 4. (because they are past states).

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Task 2. Choose 3 from the 6 topics related to used to and would. Individually, make notes. WB Example: I used to live in London. I used to play tennis, but I don't any more. I used to have long hair. I would wake up early, and go for long walks

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

T swaps ss places to discuss with different partners about the things they wrote in exercise 2. Point out Ss should talk about past habits or have any ideas in common. Examples: I used to work for Virgin atlantic, but I don’t any more. I would visit my cousins more with my family when I was younger. I didn’t like going to the park before, but now I do.
