Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of past continuous and past simple in the context of school days

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a past continuous tense

Procedure

Warmer/lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells the class two things she did the previous evening. E.g. I had dinner at 8:00. I watched TV at 9:00. Ss in pairs tell each other five things they did the previous evening, with relevant times.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Draw a stick man on the board. Draw a horizontal line on the board and put a vertical line part way along it. Write TV/ 9:00 above the vertical line. T elicits the information about Bill by asking questions. E.g What did Bill do last night? What time did he start to watch TV? What time did he turn off the TV? T puts an X and 9 : 30 as shown below: T helps the Ss to produce the model sentence, He was watching TV at 9: 30. T asks Ss , When did he start to watch Tv? Did he turn off the TV before or after 9: 30?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T shows visuals showing a man doing various things at various times (e.g reading a newspaper/ 8:30) and elicits suitable sentences from individual students. E.g. he was reading newspaper at 7: 30. Have other visuals showing two or more people doing things.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Elicit some sentences from the drill into a substitution table on the board. Check the grammar pattern by elciting that: He/She/ It task was, while You/ We /They take were The main verb takes -ing.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss complete the grammar ex.1 T monitors Feedback

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss look at pictures on page 132 for one minute. Ss work in pairs. Answers the question. T monitors Feedback

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss work in pairs. Ask and answer the questions about what they were doing at different times. T monitors Feedback

Extension Activity • To give Ss freer practice using past progressive
