Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a story in the context of the persona success

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of time expressions in the context of personal success through writing
  • To enable Ss to improve their reading skills in the context of the personal success

Procedure

Lead-in / Warmer (3-5 minutes) • to engage students’ interest in the lesson or create a need for the language

T shows pictures from a story in a mixed way and asks students for the sequence by using some time expressions which are not taking part in the language focus.

Gist Task (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model for the features of a story with time expressions

T gives instruction about the task by making sure Ss know what the title mean. T sets time for the shorter reading for Ss to choose the best title for the story 1. T monitors T allows time for peer check T conducts open class feedback to elicit answers from the students and ask the reasons for theri answers. T writes the answer on the board or projects the answer onto the board.

Language focus (5-6 minutes) • To clarify how to use time expressions in the story and practice through a new story

Before Ss start the activity, teacher asks concept checking questions to check the meaning of time expressions and does first two examples with students. Teacher tells students to look back at the Story 1 and to find the time expressions from the story and write on HO1( Language Focus 2). Teacher allows time for peer check. Teacher conducts open class feedback. Teacher projects answers onto the board.

Controlled Activity (7-9 minutes) • To allow Ss to check they have understood the features of the time expressions

T gives instruction for the activity and do the first example with the SS Ss look at the story 2 and choose the correct expressions to complete the story. Teacher monitors. Students work in small groups of four and when students finish teacher allows time for peer Check. After whole class feedback, teacher asks CCQs to clarify the meanings of the time expressions.

Semi-controlled Activity (15-18 minutes) • Brainstorming for the writing and to allow students to check whether they understood the time expressions to use during writing task

Teacher gives students the first part of the story and allow time to read it quickly with their group members. Teacher ask few questions to check what students understood from the story. Afterwards, teacher shows pictures for the wiritng task and students do brainstorming. Teacher asks groups to take notes about one picture in 2 minutes and monitors and help if they need. Then, students move their notes to the board and teacher remind students that they wil need the notes during writing so they can come and check the notes on the board. If it is needed teacher may add few notes to the board. Teacher tells it is a short story competition so when students finish writing the story whole class will choose the best story and the group will get the prize. Students start writing and teacher monitors. After five minutes, teacher tell the groups to exchange their papers then each group start to complete the new story. At the end,groups read their stories and whole class choose the best one.

Delayed Feedback (2-3 minutes) • Proper usage of the target language

If teacher has time, whole class work on the feedback and error correction
