The teacher asks students to keep their books closed and writes the following questions on the board. Students will start talking in pairs and find similarities - What fast food companies are there in your country? What do they serve? - How often and what do you eat in fast food restaurants? - When you are in a different city, where do you prefer to eat? - Whose favorite fast food is fried chicken? After 2 mins speaking, students are encouraged to share their similarities.
The teacher writes KFC and draws a K-W-L chart, and asks what students know about KFC. After eliciting their answers the teacher writes them down under "K" column. Then, asks what they would like to know about KFC, and again writes the responses down under "W" column. In the meantime the teacher conveys the key phrases, namely serve sb sth and recipe through student responses.
The teacher asks students to do the gist task of the text: Read the article and put the events in order. Students skim through the article and do the task in 3 mins, then they peer check the answers which is followed by teacher's whole class feedback. The teacher continues with the other reading task: Read the article again. Then answer the questions (which enquires specific information such as Who, When, How long...? Students scan the article in detail lasting 5 mins, then they compare the answers in different pairs. At the end the teacher gives whole class feedback.
The teacher asks further questions that need detailed reading (such as What, Why, How..? ) The students read the text in detail and compare their answers in pairs. Then, the teacher gives whole class feedback. At the end the T refers to the "L" column of the chart and check whether the things learnt match with the "W" column.
The teacher groups the class in fours. And asks them to find the turning points in the article in 2 mins. After giving feedback on the turning points, the teacher asks students to identify themselves with Harland Sanders (the founder of KFC) and to discuss in their groups about what they would do if they were in his shoes. After 5-mins talking interesting answers will be shared in the classroom.
