In this lesson, the students will be introduced to some adjectives of personality through a text. Then they'll practice some of these adjectives in controlled and semi-controlled tasks. If time, there'll be free practice where the students can use some of the adjectives.

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of adjectives of personality in the context of family

  • To provide scan and gist reading practice using a text about my cousin and I in the context of personality
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of personality


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Now let's see how much you remember the text. Who was tidy? Jeff or Tim? E.A: Jeff What does tidy mean? E.A: organized Prompt if necessary. So does a tidy person makes his bed in the mornings? E.A: yes. What's the opposite of tidy? If no answer: Look back at the text and find the opposite of tidy. But who cares about Tim and Jeff?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Look at the photo. Who is she? Who is he? E.A.: You. / Brother No. He isn't my brother. I'm an only child. He's also an only child. Who is he? E.A: Cousin Yes. Now here's a text about me and my cousin Can. Give HOs Read the instructions. What will you do? You have 4 mins. Now check with a partner. W/C FB. Ask for justification.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

What part of speech are they? E. A.: Adjective Do we use adjectives before or after nouns? (This Q might be too simple for TR speakers, but for an Arabic speaker it might be as simple so that's why it's included here) E. A.: Before Look at the adjectives again. What are they about? E. A.: Personality

Clarification & Controlled Practice (13-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language. To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Let's see what they mean. You'll read the text again and try to complete the definitions with the adjectives given in the box. Give HOs. Don't show it to your partners. You have 5 min. When Ss finish, collect the task sheets and give them randomly to the Ss. Here's the answer key. Now check your friend's answers and if it's correct put a tick next to it. 30 seconds. If time: Write down the first three adjectives of personality that come into your head. Don't show them to anyone. 1 min. Give HOs. Read the explanation and compare with a partner. Do you agree with your results?
