Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice, as well as cultural understanding of the English etiquette

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice regarding what is considered good manners in an English context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students to each think of, and present 1 tip they would provide a visitor to Sudan. Write them up.

Exposure (10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through discussion

Ask for predictions of what they think English protocol may dictate. PW - 2 things they expect to be told

Useful Country Information (10 minutes) • To highlight useful cultural information for coming unit of business correspondence

Discuss map and economy of the UK. ELICIT!!!!! predictions, keep the class talking, don't just spoon feed -

Productive Task(s) (20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target speaking

Discuss the list of PW predictions of expectations in an English society, then go through 3 pages of protocol. Compare answers.

Physical Introductions (5 minutes) • Providing basic greeting protocols

Ask class about global meeting protocols, and how England and Sudan differ. Discuss basic handshakes and introductions

Feedback and Error Correction (15 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Group discussion on students perceptions of life in Britain Elicit answers from questions: What do you think is the biggest difference between life in Britain and life in Sudan? What are the things that you would like to incorporate in your own life? What do you think is silly? What is the one thing that you would tell a fellow colleague about going to England
