Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about What's happening in one minute in our busy world? in the context of statistics round the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and inference listening practice using a text about A statistics Quiz in the context of Statistics

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show them the Film about What is happening when we are here learning English

Pre-Reading/Listening (1-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pair them and ask about what people might do in their town? ICQs: 1: should you pay attention to the time? yes 2: Are you going to talk about habits or live events? live events 3: Are you going to write them down? yes 4: Should you read your sentences for class? yes 5: How much time do you have? 3 mins

While-Reading/Listening #1 (1-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

While-Reading: read the topic ICQs: 1: Where is the introduction? right side 2: should you read or just scan? scan 3: How many questions should you answer? 2 4: Should you do it alone or with your friend? with your friend Then, ask them to prepare a paper and compare the time here with other countries ICQs: 1: Should you find information about 1 country or many? 1 2: Can you use your phone to search? yes 3: Is the time different in many countries? -> Let's see Italy, Germany, France, Turkey, Sweden

While-Reading/Listening #2 (1-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Now change their partners to refresh the class. Pre-listening: Let's do the quiz now for 3 mins and then check it by audio file(instruction 4), then give a feedback While-listening: play the audio again and do the instruction 5 ICQs: 1: So how many questions do you have? 12 2: Are they in a blue box here? yes listen carefully

Post-Reading/Listening (1-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Do the freer practice Use the 4 questions at the end of the page to raise their speaking part The teacher ask students 1 by 1, but randomly (have no time)
