Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about health and sickness in the context of Health Insurance of doctors.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of Modals of speculation in the context of health and sickness.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by telling them a true story about myself which is; I had a friend back in California, she used to use medical drops which was prescribed by her doctor. She used the drop and her eye color changed from green to dark brown, she got angry and complained about her condition, do you know another word for complain? sue. what do you do if this happens to you would you sue the doctor or no? yes I will ask this question when I put them in 2 by 2 groups when finished I will ask now do now what is called when you sue your doctor about compensation.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will get students paired up to match the vocabulary with the meanings in ex.1 and will make sure if they all understand them correctly. Then, I will make students listen to a radio interview and ask them to make assumptions of what will be the interview about. I will smoothly try get to the idea of "clinical negligence" as they are talking to each other in groups.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will listen&control their answers. Students will peer check&take a whole class FB. I will show them the questions in ex.3 and see if they can remember anything. I will make students listen to the record again and check if their answers are correct. IF necessary, students will listen to the interview once more for the last time and finalize their answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will get students discuss the the questions in exercise number 4, take some general feedback and will get students to say if what they heard on the radio could happen in Turkey. I will then squeeze the grammar part into my listening teaching. First I will teach them the modals of speculation and give them ex 1 and check the answers together. Same thing with the ex.2. I will continue with the story in grammar ex. 2 & get them to speculate in pairs about what happened considering the target language.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will move on to the pg. 79 and get them to choose the best suited verb. Will take their FB.
