Description

In this lesson, students will learn about jobs in the context of listening. Firstly, the teacher will show them some pictures about the jobs and enable students to guess. Then, there will be some speaking activities for the students. After teaching some basic vocabularies, the students will listen for details and then they complete the table sheet which was given by the teacher. After some activities held, teacher ends the lesson by a role play between students.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about and spesific information in the context of of jobs and personal information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of jobs lexis in the context of personal information and flaschcards

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will bring nine famous people all around the world and ask the ss "Where is s/he from?" "What is her/his nationality?

Pre-Listening / Exposure (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher brings some flashcards about jobs to teach the vocabulary. Students write the jobs they are familiar with on the WB and the teacher will help them to write correctly showing the stress. e.g. Manager,doctor,sales assistant,an actor,a waiter, a taxi driver, a musician, a police officer Then teacher gives HO to the class and wants them to match with their pair for about two minutes.

WhileListening #1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

The teacher wants ss to listen and repeat job vocabularies they hear. The students listen to the job vocabularies which were in the handout and repeat the vocabularies they hear.

Post- Listening (3-8 minutes) • To enable students to practice the jobs

The teacher wants ss to work in groups and learn each others job. She uses her gesture and gives an example doing the same exercise with a student. The students will have 2-3 minutes and the teacher nominates each students from the group and want her/him to say the jobs of their group..

Pre-Listening (9-15 minutes) • To provide students to have a conversation in the context of personal information and prepare for the listening

The teacher gives HO to the class to help them to work in pairs. The questions are: 1) Who is your best friend? 2) What is her/his job? 3)Is she/he married or single? The teacher models the question first saying that: A) My best friend is Cansu and she is an English teacher, too. She is single. The students will work together asking these questions. the teacher monitors the students at about 3 minutes and then the students talk about their pair's best friend. Each ss will talk about their partner's best friend. Meanwhile, the teacher writes four words on the WB about the questions: a friend, beautiful,married,single and ss repeat after the teacher.

While Listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

The students listen to two people Tina and Matt twice. Tina talks about her friends their nationality and marital status. As ss do not have the book, the teacher will give them the listening task and picture from the book and give the instructions so that it gives the students a reason to listen to. For the first listening, Ss are supposed to match people to the photos, so teacher lets students check with their pairs.

Pre-Listening (1-2 minutes) • To prepare ss for the listening task

The teacher sets the task for the second listening.She simply explains that they are supposed to complete the chart given.

While Listening (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening task

The students will listen to the conversation again and fill in the gaps while listening

Post Listening (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with the opportunity to practice what they listened

After they listened twice,the teacher will hand in the answer keys to the students and they will have peer checking. Meanwhile, teacher prepares the next activity on the WB

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To enable students to use Wh questions

Teacher writes some questions on the WB but there are some missing words. Students work in pairs to find the correct vocabulary. The questions are; A)............ ......... .her job? B)..... ... ... actress. A) ...... .... their names? B).... .... ..... Bill and John A) .... ..... you....? B) .... ... .... Germany. After working pairs, the teacher nominates the ss for the answer. Elicit -wh question. Then the teacher will give -wh question handout and ss will work in pairs. Teacher monitors them and nominates some ss for the answers

Following up Activity (4-8 minutes) • To enable students to practise

Firstly, the teacher gives the instruction about the activity. she picks a student and says the same thing on the card. E.g. I am Alice. I am from the USA. I am an actress. The activity is that the students stand up and each of them has a card given by the teacher and they pretend that they are the person of that card and they talk to each other about the jobs and their nationality. While speaking the teacher will be around or behind them and if needed she interrupts and correct the error.
