Then, there will be listening for gist, listening for details and listening for prediction as while-listening activities. In the end, Ss will do a role-play as the post-listening task.

Materials

Abc HO1
Abc HO2

Main Aims

  • To provide listening practice for gist, prediction and details, using a text about crossroads in the context of dilemmas.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in conversations in the context of dilemmas.
  • To provide clarification of some blocking words in the context of dilemmas.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

After greeting and everything, I will tell the Ss that I am not really good because I have a problem. Then I will tell them that I found a very good job in Istanbul with a very good salary and I do not know what to do. Should I go back to Iran and join my family and friends or should I stay here... And then try to elicit the word crossroads. Then, I will show them a picture of a crossroads and tell them we call this situation a crossroad (in case they did not know). I will ask some CCQs and move to the next stage.

Pre-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will ask them to work together and talk about their own crossroads. They will talk about the latest crossroad they had and they decision they made and the result. I will monitor the Ss to make sure everybody is taking and they are on the right track. I will ask for some crossroads from each group as the FB.

While-Listening #1 (Listening for gist) (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task

I will tell the Ss that they are going to listen to two people talking to their friends. I will ask the Ss to listen to the recording and say if they are at a crossroads or not. (yes they are) I will play the audio just once so the question must be really easy to answer because they have to get the general idea of the text. I will check the answer with the whole class as the FB.

While-Listening #2 (Listening for details) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task.

I will show the Ss the HO1 and tell them that they are going to listen to the audio again and answer the questions on the HO. I will give them some time to read the questions before playing the audio. (I will play the recording twice if needed.) I will give them some time to check their answers with their peers. I will check the answers with the WC as the FB.

While-Listening #3 (Listening for prediction) (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging listening for prediction task

I will ask the Ss to work in groups, unfold their HO and guess what will happen next. After two or three minutes I will play the recording and ask the Ss to listen and check their predictions and guesses. (I will play twice if needed) I will monitor them during the part that they are working in groups to make sure they are doing the right task. After the audio I will ask them if their guesses were correct or not.

Post-Listening (If time activity) (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

If I see I have more than fifteen minutes left. I will write the questions below on the WB, ask the Ss to work together and answer the questions. 1. What would you do if you were Jimmy or Fiona? 2. What would you advice? While the Ss are doing so I will monitor them to make sure they are doing the task that they are asked. I will ask some of the answers from the Ss as the FB.

Post-Listening (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will give Ss different situation and tell the instruction below: "Now you all have different situations, first read your situation (I will show them one situation on the WB using OHP) I will read the situation on the WB. Then try to memorize and remember your situation. After that you will tell your friends your situation. (I will demo it while the OHP is off) Saime (for example) I've been offered a job in China and the money is really good. The salary is great. But I should leave all my family and friends. I should leave my girlfriend, mom and sister. What do I do? After that Saime will give me some advice and suggestion using (I will elicit and write on the WB) 'If I were you, I would...' Now stand up, go around the class, talk to at least three people and explain your situation and give advice to your friends. Are you going to talk or write? (write) How many people are you going to talk to? (three or more)" One this very challenging task (for both teacher and Ss) is set, I will monitor the Ss and take notes to provide delayed error correction and to get the most interesting advice to elicit in the FB. I will elicit some advice they got as the FB part. I will provide delayed error correction and elicit the correct answers from the Ss.
