Procedure (33-54 minutes)
The lesson will start with a discussion about the picture on page 16. First, I will give my general opinion about the picture by answering the questions in Activity A. For example, I think the picture was taken in the 1990s, it was autumn, the people were looking at the trees, and I think she had a newspaper in her pocket because she wanted to read it. Then, I will ask the students to share their opinions and answer the questions in Activity A.
I will choose three or four of my students sentences to write in the correct form of past continuous.I will underline(for example) "was walking" and "were playing" and ask students to identify the auxiliary verb and the main verb. Then I will elicit the structure (was/were + verb + ing) and write it on the board.
To clarify the meaning of the Past Continuous, I will use two examples. One example will contain both the Past Continuous and the Past Simple, and the other will contain two actions in the Past Continuous. I will draw a timeline on the board and ask some CCQs to help students understand the meaning and use of the target language. First, I will ask the students whether the actions happened in the past or in the present (in the past). Then,I will focus on the difference between the Past Continuous and the Past Simple by asking questions such as: Which action was already in progress? Which action was longer? Which action interrupted the other? Through these questions, students will discover that the Past Continuous describes an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past, while the Past Simple usually describes a shorter action that interrupts it. I will also explain that we often use the Past Continuous to set the scene at the beginning of a story or to describe background actions. In addition, I will show that when two actions happen simultaneously in the past, we can use the Past Continuous for both actions. Then, I will ask the students to make the sentences negative and interrogative, and we will check them together as a whole class. Finally, I will check the students' understanding with additional CCQs and examples before moving on to the next stage.
Students should answer the question on page 129 in 4-5 minutes. They are going to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with whole class.
Students will be devided into 3 or 4 groups .They are going to talk about the questions on page 17 in 10 minutes(1.Do you post photos on social media sites? What kind of photos do you post?If not,how do you share photos with family and friends?2.Do yo have a favorite photo of yourself as a child?who took it?what were you wearing?is there a story behind?and.........).They will be checked and I will give feedback when it is needed.(delayed correction)
