Main Aims

  • Grammar. Passive vice (all forms); using expressions like (it is said that ..., he is believed to...etc) in the context of news reports about crime.

Subsidiary Aims

  • reading and listening

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Talk in pairs about who made various things you own e.g. your clothes, shoes, cars, computers...et

Exposure (10-13 minutes) • To provide context, and expose the TL

- first i will ask the Ss to read the two questions then read the text in one minute and answer the two questions, then ask them to read and circulate the right form of the verb, chek with partners, then the WC. -I will tell the Ss that they will listen to another crime story, i will ask them to read the questions first in ex. (c) then play the audio. I will ask them to answer individually then check with partners. I may play it again if necessary.

Highlighting (7-9 minutes) • to draw Ss attention to the TL

i will ask students read the extracts in ex.(d) then play the audio again so the Ss complete the gaps: 1 ... he is thought to have committed between 50 and 100 burglaries in the area. 2 It is believed that he was mainly interested in finding drugs ... 3 Cooper is also said to have made himself at home in the houses. 4 ... it is thought that he would pretend to know someone there. the activity itself will help to highlight the TL, i will draw Ss attention to the use of the TL

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-i will write a model sentences on the WB. *he is thought to have committed between 50 and 100 burglaries in the area. *It is believed that he was mainly interested in finding drugs -drill the meaning: this formal structure is used especially in news reports and and on TV, It makes the information sound more impersonal -show the structure of the sentence: It is said/believed...etc + that + clause. He/the man..etc(the subject of the clause) + is said/believed...etc + to + Infinitive (e.g. to be) or perfect infinitive (e.g have been)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

i will give student Ss a HO with the two exercises (A) and (B) and ask Ss to do exercise (a) first. check with pairs then the WC then i will ask them to do exercise (b) individually, then in pairs then check with the WC
