Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a dialogue from two old friends meeting.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of meeting up with old friends.
  • To provide review and clarification of certain vocabulary in the context of meeting up with old friends

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss wil begin watching a 2 min video about an old school friend showing up on Mr Bean's front door step. Ask Ss questions about the video. Did Mr Bean remember his friend from school? Was he happy about this man visiting his house? Has this ever happened to you? If projector isn't working- A picture of two friends hugging will be placed on wb, with a quote: "Happiness is finding old friends again and realising nothing has changed." Ask Ss if they agree.

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary. (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and review/clarify some words.

Elicit about 5 words from the audio file the Ss will listen to. The words will be: Nearly, definitely, serious (relationship), 'Come on', headquarters.

Pre-Listening & prediction. (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening, make it accessible and provide some gist.

Ss will be given a HO with a text about two olds friends re connecting after a long time. It will be in the format of a social media (Facebook) message conversation. Ss will read the text and then answer the questions in pairs. Afterwards students will make predictions about what will happen next. Predictions will be written on the board.

While Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening task.

Ss will given a HO in which they have to read the true or false statements first and then listen to the audio. Afterwards Ss will answer the questions, then check their answers in pairs. Answer key will be provided. Ss will revisit the predictions on the board and a tick will be placed next to the predictions that came true.

While Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task.

Ss with be given a HO with a gap fill. Ss will be asked to read the gap fill first and then the audio will be played once all the way through. Ss will answer and check in pairs. Audio will be played through again but pausing after each section so Ss have time write the answers. Once finished ss will check their answers and then be given the Answer key.

Post Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the listening and expand on what they've learned.

Ss will be given a HO. On the HO will be instructions for a role play. In pairs Ss will pretend to be old friends re-acquainting themselves after a long period of time.
