Reading in the context of a magazine article on a life story
Upper-intermediate, B2 level
Description
In this lesson, student practise reading for gist, specific information and detailed understanding. The lesson starts with a discussion based on a photo of a person. After making some predictions, students then read for gist and then answer some specific questions by locating the information in the text. This is followed by a second reading for detailed understanding whereby they try to figure out the meaning of some key words. Finally, there is controlled speaking practice using the key words learned and freer discussions based on the text.

Procedure (35-45 minutes)
Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students
I will show a photo of the person in the passage and ask several questions about her so that students can make some predictions about the text.
Reading for gist (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible
Read the title and first paragraph to get the gist.
While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading tasks
Students read the rest of the passage to pick up specific information to answer two questions
While-Reading #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks
Students will read the whole passage again and try to work out the meanings of six highlighted words from contexts. After peer check in pairs, I will elicit answers and explain the six words.
Post-Reading task (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
I will list several questions for students to ask and answer in pairs based on the information from the text, using the new words they have just learned.
