Description

In this lesson, we will practice verb-preposition collocations with 'about' and 'of' using life changes as the context. The target language will be practiced through initial identification/introduction through a reading gist practice. Clarification of TL will be addressed through MFP and students will have the opportunity to practice acquisition of the TL through a gap - fill controlled practice and a communicative task through a freer practice pair work activity of discussing their ideal lives.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice collocations (verb-preposition) in the context of ‘life change’.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with opportunities to increase speaking fluency through pair work and group activities.
  • To provide students with opportunities to practice and increase listening skills during peer check. conversation practices, and OCFB practices

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Lead-In Ask students two interest stirring questions: Do you think most people want to change something in their lives? Why and what do you think they want to change?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Introduction of select TL through 'Story Time' reading selection about 2 sisters discussing the need for a major life change but has been hesitant to do so. Ss will read for gist and answer two gist comprehension questions, one regarding the overall theme of the text and the other, T/F questions their own. Ss will peer check. Ss-T-Ss students will group check. OCFB will be conducted

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will introduce/ refresh students on collocations using 'of' and 'about' - primary in the text - and also 'in' on slide 3 For additional practice T will ask students to ID collocations with 'about' and 'of within the text

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language through MFPA

T rolls slides 4 and 5 with MFPA of 7 verb-prep collocations, care, complain, think, feel using 'about' and proud, remind, dream using 'of'. T will review the form, pronunciation, appropriacy of each and differences of using of vs about and how meaning changes. T will lead SS to understand and answer the meaning by looking at the pictures accompanying each word and asking them CCQs T expects there may be some addtional time spent on clarifying usage between about and of

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will ask students to read text again and practice gap fill exercises using TL as on slide 6. S will complete exercise individually Ss will check answers with peers T will track time & call for Ss to check answers collectively in OCFB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will explain the activity and place students in chat rooms in pairs or in groups, as needed. Ss will engage in a freer practice conversation with partner pairs/group to discuss their Ideal Life. Ss must use a minimum of 5 verb-preposition collocations. Students will be able to refer back to collocation chart from an earlier exercise. T will have SS return for Feedback & DC
