Description

In this lesson students will get to practice and learn about phrasal verbs while working in groups. Students will have several tasks which will help them to clarify the meaning of some phrasal verbs as well as learn new ones. The lesson will begin with a fun warmer, where students get to play a game. This will set up the lesson and allow us to move on to the next task, where I'll show different activities in photos and students will try to call out the phrasal verb needed to describe and speak during the activity. After some minor corrections and a short teaching on form and meaning, students will again try out speaking by creating different situations using phrasal verbs as part of the next task.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a description of general activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of a common set of phrasal verbs in the context of everyday activities.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be divided into 3 groups each group has 4 ss. I will divide ss into pairs with in the same group. Ss will play tic-tac-toe on the given papers by matching given verbs and preposition and creating a meaningful sentence. For each correct answer their team gets an O or an X. I will demonstrate first.

Stage #2 useful language (5-7 minutes) • To gauge ss' prior knowledge of the target language

I will display photos of people in a type of action which can be described by using phrasal verbs. I will ask students to look at the pictures and call out the type of action they're seeing. Hopefully, students are able to call out most of phrasal verbs targeted today. I will give them HO#1 and ask them to work in pairs and write two pieces of advice to give to someone in the same situation.

Stage 3: Controlled speaking practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide controlled speaking practice of the target language.

In pairs, I will give them HO#2. They have to match the topics with the paragraphs. I will ask them to underline the phrasal verbs and then I will ask them to speak to their partner about similar situations using the same phrasal verbs. I will re-group ss and ask them to tell the other pairs about the situation.

Stage# 4 Productive Task(s) (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Class will be divided into 4 groups and each group will receive one preposition which is attached to 3 definitions. Ss have to match the phrasal verb with the appropriate definition. Students will be asked to find the most verb-preposition combinations they can and then they'll talk about situations they've faced using the phrasal verbs.

Stage# 4: Follow up (8-10 minutes) • To provide freer controlled speaking

I will show them a picture of an exhausted mother. Thinking about many things happened to her. Ss have to give her pieces of advice. They may talk about similar situations happened in their real life.
