Description

in this lesson, SS are going to practice speaking in a context of problems and giving advice. firstly, I'm going to expose SS to a listening text and then, I'm going to highlight the needed language we should use to discuss in this topic. finally, they're going to practice speaking.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Role-paly in the context of problems and advice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Rebecca and Charlie's problem in the context of problems and advice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Show SS a picture of a man having problem at work - Elicit from SS the context by asking them (What can you see? Is he having a problem? What's his problem? How could he solve it?) - Show the 3 questions in ex.1 on the screen, and ask SS to discuss them in groups - CF: Listen to SS answers

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

- Tell SS now you're going to listen to two conversations about Charlie and Rebecca. A married couple who's having a problem - Show the 5 sentences on the screen, and ask SS to listen and make them true or false. - Play the audio - Ask SS to check their answers in pairs - Play the audio for a second time - Show the answer key on the screen

Useful Language (10-15 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

- Tell SS now you're going to answer an activity - Show SS ex. 4a on the screen - Ask SS to match the 3 headings with the 3 boxes together - Ask ICQs (are you going to work alone or together? together) - Monitor effectively to make sure all SS are engaged - Show SS the answer key on the screen - Now Ask SS to answer ex.4b together - Show the answer key on the screen PRACTICE - Show ex. 7 on the screen - demo with SS q.2 (what's the answer for number 2? Oh dear. I'm sorry to hear that.) - Ask SS to do the same alone (ICQs: are you working alone or together? alone) - Ask SS to check their answers in pairs

Productive Task (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

- Introduce your problem on the screen and ask SS to read it quickly. - Demo the speaking task with SS (this is my problem. What should I do?). - Put SS into groups of three (A,B,C). - Give each S a different problem, and ask them to read it. - Ask SS to speak together using the useful language presented on the screen. and take note of the piece of advice you like and will do. - ICQs: are you writing every piece of advice you listen to ? no - Monitor effectively - CF: listen to SS answers EXTENSION - Ask SS to think of a real problem you have an take notes of it (30 sec) - Ask SS to stand up and mingle and speak to at least 3 different people looking for advice. - Ask SS to find the most interesting problem - ICQs : are you looking for the best advice or the most interesting problem? the most interesting problem

Feedback and Error Correction (3-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

- Ask SS to provide the most interesting problem they heard of or any interesting other stuff - Listen to SS answers - Provide SS with the language feedback if there's an extra time - thank SS for attending the lesson
