Description

In this lesson, the focus is on listening and speaking in the context of a successful female athlete, Jessica Ennis. In the speaking fluency activity ss discuss successful people, more specifically, how and why they become successful.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about Jessica Ennis in the context of successful female athletes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking fluency in the context of 'How and why people become successful'.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the ss photos of 3 famous female athletes (Serena Williams, Aslı Alptekin, and Jessica Ennis) and ask them what they have in common. Ask 'Did you watch the Olympics? Have you heard of Jessica Ennis?' Show 1 minute video of Jessica Ennis (this shows all 7 events of the Heptathlon which could help ss with the first activity).

Pre-Listening (3-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Set task for matching activity. Give HO to ss and elicit answer to #1. Ss then work in pairs to complete. Answers written on WB.

Pre-teach Vocabulary (4-4 minutes) • To pre-teach vocabulary that will help the ss better understand the audio text.

Vocabulary to pre-teach includes: injure, determined, charity, patience, be an influence on somebody Through photos and query I will try to elicit the vocabulary. CCQs

Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening tasks

Show HO for listening activities. Tell students to fold and only look at the top half. Hand out and set task. Ss listen to an interview with Jessica Ennis for specific information and underline the correct answer on a multiple choice activity. If necessary, play the dialog a second time. Ss peer check answers. For FB, two AKs are given to each table for ss to check.

Listening #2 (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

Ss unfold HO. Set task. Give them time to read questions. Ss listen to the interview again, this time for more detailed information. Ss peer check answers. Answers are elicited from ss. AK are given to SS for FB.

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In groups of 4, ss discuss successful people, what they do, and how and why they become successful. After discussion, each group shares some ideas with the class.
