Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of likelihood and probability in the context of predicting trends in retail banking

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of language used for likelihood and probability in the context of using alternative phrases

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students to discuss the accuracy of weather forecasts. List the words used to describe probability. Ask each student to make a weather prediction for 1 January 2014 for different areas, using the identified words.

Exposure (10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a situation

Discuss impact of online banking in Sudan, each creating a sentence beginning with: It is possible that .... I believe ...... will be impossible I am certain that .....

Clarification (15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Create cline of probability using 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% and 0%. definitely, certainly, clearly, obviously, perhaps, possibly, maybe, never, probably, really, impossible, unable, improbable, unlikely, presumably, no doubt, could be, might be, likely to, unlikely, improbable, stand a chance, likely to Pairs to create their own clines Whole class to clarify answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Free Practice (5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Each student to write 3 sentences pertaining to their personal experiences at work, using 3 of the 5 probabilities.
