Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Present perfect tense in the context of of living history

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about an archeologist in the context of living history.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Three pictures will be tacked to the wb, A picture of pyramids in Egypt, the funeral mask of Tutankhamen and a picture of an archeologist. Questions to ask about these pictures to get the Ss interested: Where are these pictures? What are they pictures of? When were the pyramids built? Who's funeral mask is this? Who was Tutankhamen? Whats the man in this picture doing? What is this job called? Have you ever been to Egypt?

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text.

Ss will be given a HO with pictures of Frieda Hoffman, an archeologist, and a short text about her. Ss will discuss in pairs. What's her nationality? Which countries has been to? What are her passions?

Highlighting (5-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss will be given out a HO with a gap fill of an interview. Ss will have to put the correct question with the answer. Ss will work in pairs and the answers will be provided on an audio recording of the interview. Feedback as a WC via nominating some pairs.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss will work in a group and be asked to match the sentences to the correct tenses. Ss will then be given the answer key. Feedback via WC to check MFP. Qs to get meaning: Have you ever been to South America? Are they talking about a specific time in this sentence? When did they go to South America? Do you know? Which tense is it? Form: Does anyone know the form for this present perfect question? Can you write it on the board? If not, discuss in pairs then try again. Drill for pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will listen and complete another gap fill from the interview. Ss will check in pairs then be given the answer key. WC feedback via nominating some pairs. Questions to ask: What did you study at university? I studied Ancient history. Past simple or past perfect? Have you ever had an ordinary job? Past simple or past perfect?

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss will be asked to work in groups. They will be given a HO with questions Have you ever...questions on it. Ss will have to ask each other questions and make up answers, Ss will have to guess who was telling the truth and who was lying. WC feedback, nominate some students who had interesting stories.
