Main Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of synonyms and antonyms and getting familiar with their uses.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in conversations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and generate some interest.

First, I will show Ss the picture in HO1 and ask them to think what they are talking about. Then give them the HO1 and ask them to work in groups and say if they think that conversation is ok. And if it is not, what is wrong with it? Elicit SYNONYM and ANTONYM in the FB. Finally, tell them to try the conversation again using the suggestions. I will monitor them during the activities to make sure they are doing the right task and if they know all the vocabulary.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Once everybody has no question, I will start to elicit the 6/7 adjectives I have in my LA sheet. First, I go for the word naughty, i will say if a kid for example 7 years old boy is very very noisy and doesn't listen to his parents and does whatever hi wants, he is......? Then the word miserable and other words on my LA sheet. I will ask CCQs and drill each word. Finally I will ask students if they have any questions.

Controlled Practice (synonyms) (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will show the students HO2 and ask them to work in their groups and put the words in the gaps. While they are doing so, I will monitor to see if everyone is doing the right task and see if there is any early finisher. If one group finishes earlier than the others I will ask the members to help other groups. Once they are done I will play the audio as the answer key and ask them to check their answers and say what is the extra line of each conversation.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will ask the students to look at exercise 4 on HO2 and write as many words as they can think of for each word. I will monitor to give them some ideas and to see which group has the best answers for each word and to make sure that they don't write any wrong synonyms. At the end, I will elicit the interesting and correct synonyms I noticed while I was monitoring.

Controlled practice (antonyms) (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

First, I will regroup the students with numbering technique. After that, I will show the students HO3 and ask them to find antonyms in the conversation. Then I elicit the answer ( messy, tidy). Afterwards, I will ask them to tell me when and where do we use antonyms. Then get them to unfold their papers see the rules and write one antonym for each word in exercise 7. While they are doing so I will monitor them to see if they are on the right track. Once they are done I will provide them with answer keys.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask the students to look at exercise 8 and in their groups agree or reply to the sentences using synonyms and antonyms. I will monitor during the activity to check they are doing the right task and provide some help and ideas if needed and more importantly take some notes on their mistakes to provide delayed error correction. Once they are done, I will play the audio and get tell the students to listen and compare. Finally, I will write my notes on the WB and with the help of students correct the mistake (I will also write one correct sentence to motivate and encourage the students).

Uf time activity (controlled practice) (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will show the students HO4 and ask them to match the items. If we still have enough time we do the next controlled practice. I will monitor to make sure everybody is doing the task. Get one of the early finisher come to the board, check with class and ask if anyone has any questions as FB part.
