Main Aims

  • To provide practice of the future perfect tense and the future continuous tense in the context of natural world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Natural wolrd in the context of Antartica

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- show SS the pictures of Antarctica, elicit from SS the name of the place "what's this place?" - present two discussion questions on the screen, ask SS to discuss in pairs or groups - CF: listen to SS answers

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- tell SS you're going to listen to a conversation between Martha and Joe about a journey to Antarctica - show the questions on the screen and ask SS to read them first - tell SS to listen and answer the questions, play the audio - tell SS to check their answers in pairs - show the AK on the screen

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- tell SS now we're going to learn new grammar, but you'll figure it out together Meaning: - present on the screen ex. 4a - ask SS to match the sentences with their meanings in pairs or groups - ICQs (are you going to work alone or together?) - show the AK on the screen, ask SS if they have any question Form: - present the two marker sentences on the screen - demo with SS the highlighting form task (which color is the subject? which color is the verb?) - then ask SS to do the same - show the AK on the screen Pronunciation: - make sure SS don't see the sentences - model each sentence twice, elicit from SS phonological features - drill the sentences with SS using different drilling techniques (front chaining, back chaining)

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- tell SS now we're going to answer an exercise about this grammar - demo number 2 with SS - Ask SS to do the same individually - ICQs (now, are you going to answer together? no) - ask SS to check their answers in pairs - show the AK on the screen

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- show the two questions on the screen - demo the speaking task with SS (I'll be living in Canada in the next year, because.....) - give SS 30 seconds to think and take notes. ICQs (are you writing full sentences or notes? notes) - ask SS to stand up, mingle, and speak to 3 people. (write down the most interesting answer) - ICQs (are you going to speak to 1 person? no, 3) (are you going to write down the most interesting answer? yes) - monitor while SS speaking - CF: listen to SS answers - LF: highlight the errors on the board and let SS correct it themselves

Freer Practice 2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- present the questions on the screen - ask SS to discuss them in groups and find similar answers - ICQs (now, are you going to look for the most interesting answer or similar answers? similar answers) - monitor while SS speaking - CF: listen to SS answers - LF: highlight the errors on the board and let SS to correct themselves
