To introduce and provide practice of writing a postcard (20-30 words)

To provide practice reading and postcards.
Procedure (44-44 minutes)
Show pictures of vacation destinations (beach, mountains, city, camping, etc.). Ask students: “Where is this?” “Have you ever visited a place like this?” “What do people do on vacation?” Then ask: “Do people still send postcards?” “What do people usually write in postcards?” Students discuss in pairs for 2 minutes, then share ideas with the class.
Give students a short sample postcard. Sample Postcard: Hi Emma, Greetings from Antalya! The weather is sunny and hot. Yesterday we went swimming and ate delicious seafood. Tomorrow we are going to visit the old town. We love the hotel. It is very comfortable. I’m having a great time here. See you soon! Love, Sarah Students read individually first. Then ask gist questions: 1. Where is Sarah? Antalya 2. What did she do yesterday? went swimming and ate seafood 3. Is she enjoying her vacation? yes Next, ask students to identify parts of the postcard by highlighting the sections as a group: mailing address, greeting, place, activities, closing, signature
Provide useful phrases for students to diversify their writing. 1. Greetings: Hi… Hello from… Greetings from… 2. Talking about weather: The weather is sunny/rainy/hot/cold. It is beautiful here. 3. Activities: We went swimming. I visited… We ate… I saw… 4. Feelings: I’m having a great time. It’s amazing/fun/beautiful. 5. Closing: See you soon! Best wishes, Love,
Tell students: “You are on vacation in another city or country. Write a postcard to a friend.” Students choose a destination. Instructions Include: mailing address where you are weather activities feelings closing sentence signature. Writing Length 45-70 words Teacher monitors and supports students during writing.
Students exchange postcards and check: Did the writer include all parts? Is the message clear? Teacher Error Correction Write common anonymous errors on the board. Include examples of good language use. If time allows have students read postcards aloud
