Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to use and identify gerunds and gerund phrases accurately in spoken and written contexts.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will also practice: speaking fluency through pair interaction, listening to classmates’ responses, sentence analysis and grammatical noticing.

Procedure

Lead-in (2 minutes) • To introduce the topic and activate prior knowledge

Teacher writes two sentences on the board: “Swimming is fun.” and “Reading books improves your mind.” Teacher asks guiding questions to elicit the target language.

Clarification (4 minutes) • To clarify meaning and form

Teacher explains gerunds and gerund phrases using examples and CCQs. Students identify gerunds and phrases in sample sentences.

Controlled Practice (4 minutes) • To check understanding and increase engagement.

Students use True/False cards to respond to grammar statements after discussing answers with partners.

Pair Work (3 minutes) • To provide controlled production practice.

Students work in pairs to create one sentence with a gerund and one with a gerund phrase. Teacher monitors and supports.

Feedback, Assessment & Closure (2 minutes) • To consolidate learning and assess understanding

Teacher elicits definitions and correct examples from students. Students complete a short exit ticket (HO 1)
