Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Defeat in the context of Silver Medals

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of competition

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Go over HW. Get a few students to share their ideas. Discuss this quote: “Anyone can deal with victory. Only the mighty can bear defeat.” ― Adolf Hitler Do students agree or disagree? Why / why not?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students have discussed quote Have students recall to mind their own defeats. Were they able to accept it well and move on or not? Any lingering defeats? Ask students to consider, while listening, how people accept defeat

While-Reading/Listening #1 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Play audio at normal speed. After students discuss in partners have group discussion to check what students understood. Clarify the part about the crash landing survivor who dies. Hand out a list of questions for students to answer during second listening. Students look through first and answer what they can.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (18-21 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Listen through again slow. Students complete worksheet. Partner then group feedback. Hand out words and have students use it to complete any further questions. Students find new vocabulary and we learn it together. Language focus: Prepare it at home! Make a worksheet on some grammar or lexis ish to follow up with the lesson.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-17 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Give background information about Surya Bonaly Show clip from Surya Bonaly medal ceremony Ask students about what they see. Do you feel she handled herself well? How would you have responded in her shoes? I need to think up something for the last half hour or so....
