Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice the techniques of reading which are reading for gist, and reading for details. They are going to practice controlled speaking and freer speaking.

Abc Image of a panicked mother.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Risky play in the context of children unsupervised by adults.
  • To practice reading for details and speaking

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice freer speaking in the context of risky unsupervised play by adults

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show some pictures of kinds of risky play in the park. I will ask what is the boy/girl doing? Is he/she safe?is there anyone around supervising? No! What will happen if he fall down and gets a minor hurt? He will learn to help himself, next time he will be careful. I will elicit answers.

Pre-Reading. (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In pairs, T will give HO#1:2 packs of paper strips and ask Ss to match the vocabulary with the definition. T monitors. Whole class feed back. T provides CCQs. T drills vocab.

While-Reading #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with reading for gist task.

T gives HO#2 choose the main idea task. T asks ss to skim the passage and try to choose the suitable main idea. Ss compare their answers. T asks them to discuss the main idea in their groups.

While-Reading #2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks.

T regroups Ss and give HO#3 True/False. T asks Ss to work in pairs and read the passage one more time in detail and try to find out the statements in the passage and decide whether they are true or false and then try to correct the false one/s. Ss peer check with new partner.

Post-Reading. Freer Speaking Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

* T projects an image of an affectionate mother. She is panicked of her son's risky play. She is so frightened that he may get injured. * T encourages Ss to work in pairs and brainstorm ideas for advice to help her to calm down and be happy. * T expands groups and continues discussion. * W/C F/B
