Description

To practice functional language related to making suggestions/discussing problems

Materials

Abc Pg 85, NCE Pre-Int SB

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for giving suggestions and discussing problems

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of improvements and suggestions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show an image of Paradiso Coffee Bar from the textbook. Encourage interest in the topic by asking the following questions: Look at the picture. What do you see? What kind of place is this? Do you like it? Do you think it can be improved?

Text work (8-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text (gist + intensive task)

GIST: Show the question for the gist task. Provide two minutes to read the text dialogue and answer the question: "What are Bob and Paul discussing?" A: they are discussing improvements to the Paradiso Cafe. They want to give suggestions to the owner. Detail Reading: Have students reread the text for 4 minutes. Have students find sentences that offer advice or discuss problems. They work as a class. Answers: We could give them recommendations, How about painting the walls?, I'd prefer to change the furniture. I think we should contact the owner..., We could write him an email., I don't think it's a good idea to write and email.

Clarification (12-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: Use CCQs to define meaning. 1. I'd prefer to... a) Am I talking about what I want? yes b) Is this a polite way to say what I want? yes, 2. I think we should... a)Do I think this is a good idea? yes b)Must people do this? no, 3. We could... a)Are there other choices? yes b)Is this one possible idea? no 4. How about... ing? a)Am I asking people to think about this idea? yes b)Do I want other people's opinions? yes 5. I don't think it's a good idea to... a) Am I disagreeing? yes b)Is this my opinion? yes Form: For teaching form I will ask these questions related to grammar: Which sentences uses verb + ing A:How about painting the walls?, Which sentences use base verbs? A: We could give them recommendations, I think we should contact the owner, Which sentences use infinitive verbs? A: I'd prefer to change the furniture, I dont think it's a good idea to send and email. Pronunciation: For timing reasons I decided to focus on two sentences for pronunciation. I am focusing on word stress and intonation. The first sentence is: how about PAINTing the WALLS? with rising intonation because it is a question. The second sentence is: I DON'T think it's a GOOD idea to SEND an EMAIL. with dropping intonation since it is negative.

Controlled Practice (6-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

For the controlled practice, students will work on a text of a diary entry about wanting to buy a house. They will use google forms to complete the activity. Answers: 1. should, 2. I'd prefer to, 3. I don't think it's a good idea to, 4. could, 5. How about OCFB after the activity to clarify questions and address incorrect answers.

Free Practice (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be given the following scenario for improving Paradiso Coffee Bar: The owner has given you $500 dollars to improve the Paradiso Coffee Bar. Work in pairs to decide what improvements to make. What food and drinks will you sell? Are you going to repaint the walls? What color? Is there anything else you would like to buy? Share with the class your suggestions. BORs will be used for 4+ students. Useful phrases are provided for easy access. Image will be put in the chat as well as access to slideshow if they need it.
