Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in reading for gist and for specific information(scanning) in the context of air travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • to consolidate the gist and detailed reading practice with speaking practice for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will write on the board the quote '' I don't have a fear of flying, I have a fear of crashing'' to let the students guess the topic.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will pair the students and give them HO1 which is the back cover of the book ''Air Travel: the inside story'' to prepare them for the gist reading by discussing the questions in it and then as a whole elicit some ideas.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Give HO2 and tell the students to read the passage and see if their answers to the questions given in HO1 were correct. Get feedback about their answers.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Give the Ss HO3 and ask them to read it. Afterwards, ask them to scan the text specifically to find the statements given in hand out 3 were true or false, and pair the students to peer check their answers and while they are checking I will write the answers on the white board.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

group the students and tell them to discuss whether the information they read about air travel was surprising? Which and why? Do they have any similar experiences?
