Description

In this lesson students will learn about listening for gist and detail. First there will be a general discussion to set the context and then they will listen to the audio. This will be followed by three exercises to test what they have picked up.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson the students should be able to listen for gist and detail. They should also be able to speak in the context of foreign films.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking for fluency and a higher level of vocabulary.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Ask if everybody likes watching movies. - Project posters. - Tell them to get in pairs and discuss Ex-7 (on PPT). - Whole class feedback.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Hand out fill in the blanks (can work in pairs). 3 mins. - Ask each pair to give one answer. 2 mins.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Project exercise 8a on PPT. - Tell them to discuss in groups. - Go around asking what they think.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- project 8b on PPT.and give instructions. - Play audio. - They can discuss in groups while I monitor/listen/support. - Give out ex-8c and tell them to read. (1 min) (individually) (ONLY READ) - Play audio again. - Put in groups a,b,c,d and ask answer from group A. When they answer they can nominate another group to answer.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Project speaking activity questions. - Let them talk in groups. - Whole class feedback. - Show 3 sentences and ask if they are correct. If wrong, what is the correct way.
