Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous in the context of an air travel incident. There will be a focus on guided discovery and S-S learning.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detail in the context of air travel.
  • To provide fluent and accurate speaking practice in a conversation with the context of air travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write the headline of the text "Nightmare over the Atlantic!" on the board. Get students to guess what the article might be about. Ask them what some other nightmares on a plane might be? Hopefully this will get the students interested in topic and lead in to the main exercise .

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss will receive a HO with a text from a real newspaper article about an incident that happened during a flight. This will provide the context before they study the TL in more detail. They will be asked to read the question first, "what exactly happened?" Then read the text. Specifically get students to ignore the verb questions, and only read the article. Ss will check their answers in pairs then as a WC check for gist.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss will now read the story again and circle the right form of the verbs on the HO from 1-9, drawing attention to the TL. Ss will check their answers in pairs and then check their answers with the answer keys on the board. T will then ask Ss if they had any questions about the answers. This will give T a chance to find out what the students don't know.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss will be divided into groups of three and given a matching exercise to complete. They will have to match the sentence to the correct narrative tense. T will monitor and check students answers and provide clarification where needed. Students will check their answers on the answer key provided.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will be given a HO similar to the first text and will have to pick the correct verb form. The text will also be keeping with the same context of airline/airport incidents. Ss will work in pairs and then check answers from the answer key that will be pasted all around the room. This exercise will check that the Ss have understood the TL and prepare them for the next exercise.

Semi controlled and Free(r) Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will be given a final HO and asked to complete the two sentences on the sheet using the four narrative tenses they have learned about during the lesson. This will help to reinforce what the Ss have learned and start using some productive skills that will lead into the next lesson. Ss will work in groups of 3. T will monitor and provide error correction where needed.
