Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and review of phrases in the context of free time activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells the ss that we are going to talk about some free time activities. T projects the phrases on the IWB and asks ss if they have ever used the phrases/know about the phrases. ss will do the discussion in pairs. ICQs: Are you going to talk about work or free time activities? Are you going to write something? Mime Game: T demonstrates by gesturing one of the phrases herself and letting the ss guess. T has all the phrases written on small pieces of paper and also displayed on the board. T asks ss to pick one randomly and let others guess the phrase through gestures. T reinforces the pronunciation. ICQs: Are you going to speak? Are you going to show your chit (task) to others? T sets ss in new pairs T tells ss to discuss in their new pairs their 5 favourite things to do on Saturdays. ICQs: Are you going to discuss or write? Are you going to talk about Saturday or Sunday? Are you going to talk about something that you do or wish to do?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T projects the picture of Freddie and Jeanette along with 3 questions to let ss wonder and discuss in pairs: 1. Are they good friends? 2. Where are they? 3. What are they talking about?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T distributes HO#1 and asks ss to fill in the gaps individually while listening to the audio. T plays the audio# 53 from CD#1 and asks ss to listen. T provides FB through peer checking in pairs. T tries to keep it as ss centred as possible.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T distributes HO#2 and plays the audio once again. T guides ss to focus on the things that Jeanette does in her free time. ICQ: Are you going to tick the things that Freddie does in his free time? Are you going to tick things that Jeanette does in her free time? T provides FB through peer checking in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will tell ss to think about Freddie and Jeanette once again. T will elicit from ss something that Jeanette doesn't do on Saturday evening. T will write the Present Simple negative sentence on the IWB and explain the form briefly. T will elicit from the ss: Which Tense is this? Is it a positive sentence or a negative one? What is the subject? Can you find an infinitive in the sentence? T will define Infinitive verbs if needed. Can you find an auxiliary verb in the sentence? T will define auxiliary verbs if needed. T will distribute HO#3 and ask ss to work individually. T will write 2 sentences on the board. T will tell the ss to write the sentences in the table. ICQs: Will you work in pairs or individually? Will you use the sentences displayed on the board or make up your own sentences? Will you write the sentence in the table or somewhere else? T will take WC FB
