Main Aims

  • To reinforce vocabulary recognition and spelling through a collaborative semantic-field competition.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To improve students' vocabulary recall speed.
  • To practice spelling familiar vocabulary correctly.
  • To increase student engagement through movement and competition.
  • To encourage teamwork and communication among students.
  • To develop listening skills through understanding category instructions.

Procedure

Warm-Up (3-5 minutes) • To break the ice and set a relaxed, safe tone.

Call the English and NAVLE students out. Gather them in the yard. Ask about their days. Small fast talk while everyone is ready.

Explanation (3-5 minutes) • To ensure students fully understand the rules and dynamics of the competition.

Divide students into 3 teams. Assign each team a board or board section. Show students the magnetic letters table. Explain the rules clearly: -One representative from each team comes to the front each round. -The teacher gives a semantic field/category. -Students must form words related to the category using the magnetic letters. -Words must be placed correctly on their team board. Each round lasts 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Practice round (3-5 minutes) • To demonstrate the dynamic in an easy way.

Model one short practice round with an easy category to confirm they understood the dynamic correctly. The teacher is part of the practice round. Make it shorter, around 30 seconds long. Answer all the doubts they might have.

Game! (38-40 minutes) • To practice vocabulary recall, spelling, and collaborative communication through a competitive team game.

Begin the official rounds. Play music during each round to maintain energy and urgency. Announce one semantic field per round. Students race to find letters, build words, and place them on their team board. At the end of each round: Stop the music. Count the valid words. Correct spelling if necessary. Award one point to the winning team. Rotate representatives every round so all students participate. Continue with multiple categories depending on time and energy.

Cool Down (3-5 minutes) • To finish the lesson calmly while reviewing vocabulary from the activity.

Ask students to sit down with their teams. Invite a few students to share answers with the class. Congratulate all teams and announce the final winner. End the class positively and thank students for participating.
