Description

In this lesson, students will listen to a text between a patient and a doctor. They will listen for gist, detail, and fill the gap by using the present perfect and present perfect continuous tense in verbs. They will share with other students what they have been doing when not feeling well. In addition, they will talk about what they have been doing to keep a healthy life. They will discuss these through controlled exercise SOLO, discuss and compare answers through PW and WC. In the end, they will practice these two tenses in SOLO, PW and WC by doing freer exercise.

Main Aims

  • To provide review of present perfect and present perfect continuous tense in the context of sickness and what to do to prevent being sick

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed and gist listening practice using a text about illness in the context of listen to a conversation between a doctor and a patient
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a PW

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • to get students interested in the topic

Enter class by acting sick (Script: Act weak. "Good morning. How’s everybody? good? good to hear." Touch my forehead and said, "oh, I am not feeling well. I have taken my temperature 5 or 6 times this morning and it stays at 37.3". "Do anyone know what's the normal body temperature?" hear answers, then say " I believe it is 37, but I am 37.3, I must be very sick, I think I should go home after class and go to the doctor. What do you think? Ss answer. T stop acting and ask "do you think I am really sick or pretend to be sick? Or I am just worried too much about my health?" Ss answer. T asks "Have you ever worried too much about your health? Have you ever pretend to be sick? Why?"

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

* play the audio 1.35 (Script: Now let's listen to the conversation between a patient and a doctor." Go to computer and turn to Ss then give instruction. "After listening, you will answer two questions: 1. How long Mr. Blaine has been sick? 2. What does the doctor tell him?" ICQ: "So how many questions you will answer?" Ss answer "2." * PW students next to each other, ask them to compare their answers. * WC FB

Highlighting (9-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

* pre ex:3b, Listen to the audio 1.35 again (Script: "Now we will listen to the same conversation again. This time we will listen more carefully. After listening you will answer questions." Show handout 1 with CCQs. I will monitor how many times ss need to listen to understand *Ask ss to compare their answer with the partner *Ask ss' FB in WC ------------------------- ex: 3c *play the audio *PW, discuss whether Mr. Blaine is sick, if not, what is it? Does he like to go to go to the doctor for fun? or Maybe he is just too concerned about his health? *optional to bring up the word " hypochondriac"

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

* Write below two examples on the WB and ask CCQs to clarify meaning I haven’t been feeling well for a few days. I have taken my temperature five or six times this morning. CCQ: Is this past tense? – No Will I still feeling not well later today? –Yes Will I take my temperature later today? –Yes Are you feeling bad now? – Yes Are you taking your temperature now? –No * I will elicit student to create the form Present perfect simple Present perfect continuous I have taken my temperature I have not been feeling well S+have + Past Participle S+have not been + Ving * pronunciation: Anticipated problem: Ss might have difficulity saying “I haven’t, I’ve. Solution: I’ll model and drill and write on WB when necessary /

Controlled Practice (7-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

*ex:3b, * give HO2 as a script of the audio but take out the TL verb. *write missing verb on WB (cough, take, have, feel) and ask them to choose a verb to use. *Ask ss to fill the gap *Play the audio and ask ss to compare their answers *Ask ss to compare their answers with their pair *Play audio again *WC fb *give answer key * CCQs example: Was Mr. Blaine feeling sick before today? Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

* topic, what have you been doing to keep yourself healthy? * PW, 2 answers for each questions. then compare answer. 1. What have you done last week to be healthy? example: I have done running 3 times last week. 2. What have you been doing to be healthy? example: I have been running to be healthy.
